Looking for a nutritious side dish to add to your weekly dinner rotation? These cajun sweet potato wedges fit the bill.

They're coated in a spicy cajun seasoning and can be popped in the oven with just five minutes of prep. Sweet potato wedges make a great addition to just about any weeknight meal!

Serve sweet potato wedges as a side dish with your favorite protein. They pair well with burgers, brats, meatloaf, or baked chicken.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients on a counter top.
  • Sweet potatoes - Can be substituted with any potatoes you have on hand. Yukon gold are a great choice for slicing and roasting because they'll hold their shape after baking.
  • Olive oil - Can be substituted with your favorite cooking oil.
  • Cajun seasoning - Can be homemade or store bought. I also have a recipe for homemade cajun seasoning if you'd like to make your own.

Tips and tricks

Slicing and preparing cajun sweet potato wedges.

Preparing your sweet potatoes - Rinse and scrub each potato to remove any residual dirt from the outside.

Peeling optional - Feel free to leave the skin on for added nutrition and easier prep. If you'd prefer, you can peel your potatoes.

Slicing your potatoes - Cut each potato in half lengthwise, then slice each of those halves into about 4 wedges each. Add all of your wedges to a large bowl to be tossed in seasoning.

Flip halfway through - Optionally, flip your potato wedges halfway through baking for even browning on all sides. You may find this necessary if your oven has hot spots or doesn't bake evenly.

Storage

Cooked sweet potatoes will keep for 3 to 5 days in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator.

Potatoes can be reheated in the microwave or in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake until heated through, about 10 to 15 minutes. Turn on the broiler for the last 1 to 2 minutes for crispy edges.

If using the broiler, watch your potatoes carefully and do not walk away (the broiler can burn food quickly if you're not watching).

Frequently asked questions

Dipping a sweet potato wedge into a bowl of ranch dressing.
Why are my sweet potato wedges not crispy?

Baked sweet potato wedges won't turn out crispy like French fries. Frying potatoes in oil adds a distinct crispiness that can't be achieved by baking. However, you can take a few steps to ensure your potato wedges turn out as crispy as possible. First, don't overcrowd your pan. Second, don't skip the olive oil. Oil on the outside of your potatoes will help create a crispy texture. Last, turn on the broiler for the last 1 to 2 minutes of baking to help crisp up the edges. While using the broiler, watch your potatoes and don't walk away. The broiler can burn any food quickly if you're not paying attention.

What dipping sauces go well with sweet potato wedges?

Sweet potato wedges can be served with many popular dipping sauces like ranch (like shown above), a spicy aioli, or even ketchup.

What main dishes can I serve with sweet potato wedges?

A few of my favorites include baked chicken drumsticks, chicken cheesesteaks, and oven roasted brats.

Can I make this recipe with regular potatoes?

Yes, this recipe works great with just about any potato you have on hand. I recommend Yukon gold potatoes because they hold their shape well after roasting.
