Choosing the right wine
How do you choose the right wine for a sangria? While I am far from being an expert in wine, I know what I like and don’t like. When using wine in any recipe, you’ll want to choose a wine that you would enjoy by itself.
Just because you’re adding more ingredients to your sangria doesn’t mean they will cover up the flavor of a bad-tasting wine. On the same note, a sangria recipe doesn’t require the most expensive wine you can afford.
Guess what. Any $10-20 bottle of grocery store wine that you enjoy will work perfectly. The most important point to take away from all of this is – use a wine that you LIKE!
If it’s not a rosé, that’s okay too. A moscato, pinot grigio, or riesling would also make a great choice.
Once you get the hang of making sangria, it’s easy to customize with your favorite fruits. Try using the same amounts of different fruits, like peaches, raspberries, or oranges.
The possibilities are endless.
With sangria, I like to make a batch a few hours ahead. This way, the flavors of your fruits will have a chance to meld with your wine.
If making ahead, wait until just before serving to add your club soda (or lemon lime soda).
Club Soda or Lemon Lime Soda
I like to give the option of club soda or lemon lime soda in this recipe for a few reasons. Club soda will make this sangria lighter and lower in calories.
If you’re using a sweet wine, you may not need the additional sugar that you’ll find in lemon lime soda.
Think you’ll want more sweetness? Feel free to use lemon lime soda, like Sprite, instead. This all depends on the wine that you choose, along with your personal preferences.
The best part about sangria is that it’s totally flexible and can be customized in many ways.
