Everyday Seasoning by The Toasty Kitchen

Everyday seasoning is a savory seasoning mix that goes with pretty much everything. Think of it as an upgraded version of salt and pepper! Use it to season your favorite protein, potato salad, or roasted vegetables.

Mixing spices with a metal spoon.

I love making homemade seasoning blends. Cajun, ranch, Italian, and taco seasonings are a few of my favorites. Everyday seasoning is the next blend that you've got to add to your spice rack!

Everyday seasoning is a combination of my favorite spices that I use frequently: garlic, onion, paprika, salt, pepper, and ground mustard. It has a mild, savory flavor that complements almost any dish.

Add everyday seasoning to plain chicken breasts before roasting or sautéing. Toss cubed potatoes or broccoli in oil and everyday seasoning before roasting. I've even made seasoned butter with everyday seasoning, like in my oven roasted corn on the cob recipe.

Ingredients

A bowl of spices to make everyday seasoning.
  • Garlic powder - Adds a pungent, garlicky flavor.
  • Onion powder - Adds a zesty, concentrated onion flavor.
  • Paprika - Adds a sweet, peppery flavor. Use smoked paprika to add a smoky flavor to your everyday seasoning.
  • Salt - Enhances the flavors of the other spices and the food you're seasoning.
  • Pepper - Adds an earthy, warm flavor.
  • Ground mustard - Has an intense aroma and a warm, pungent taste on its own. Ground mustard adds a bit of tang and depth of flavor to the seasoning blend.

Tips and tricks

Everyday seasoning mixed in a bowl.

Use new herbs and spices - I recommend buying new herbs and spices before assembling a spice blend like everyday seasoning. Ground herbs and spices taste best within the first six months and continually lose their flavor over time.

Only make what you'll use in six months - If you don't cook with everyday seasoning frequently, I recommend making a smaller batch of seasoning. To reduce the measurements in the recipe card, hover over the serving size and use the sliding bar.

Frequently asked questions

How much everyday seasoning should I use?

The best amount to use is totally dependent on your own taste buds. If you're seasoning food after cooking, think of it as a more flavorful version of salt and pepper. Add a similar amount and do a taste test. Keep in mind that more seasoning can always be added, but it's very difficult to fix an over-seasoned dish.

What is everyday seasoning used for?

Everyday seasoning is like an upgraded salt and pepper. I can be used in place of anything that you'd season with just salt and pepper, like hamburgers, roasted vegetables, chicken breasts, baked potatoes, or corn on the cob.

Can I add other herbs and spices?

Yes, red pepper flakes, oregano, basil, and cayenne pepper are other popular additions depending on your preferred flavors.

How long does everyday seasoning last?

Ground herbs and spices are best used within the first six months (ideally 3 months) for best flavor, but will keep for 2 to 3 years in airtight containers. I recommend making a quantity of everyday seasoning that you think you'll use within about 6 months. This recipe can easily be scaled down by hovering over the servings in the recipe card and using the sliding bar.

Is everyday seasoning spicy?

No. Everyday seasoning has a mild, savory flavor and doesn't contain any spicy ingredients. To make your everyday seasoning spicy, add ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
