Muddy buddies snack mix, also known as "puppy chow" or "reindeer chow", is a sweet snack mix made with chex cereal. Christmas muddy buddies is a great seasonal variation of my lemon muddy buddies and strawberry muddy buddies that I like making in the warmer months.

Coated in peppermint white chocolate and dusted in confectioner's sugar, this sweet holiday treat comes together in just a few minutes. Plus, there's no need to turn on the oven. It's an easy no-bake candy treat!

Make a batch of Christmas muddy buddies to snack on for holiday movie night, or to give as a gift in a decorative tin. It makes a great addition to an appetizer or dessert table at your next holiday party.

    Ingredients and substitutions

    Ingredients on a counter top.
    • Chex cereal - Any type can be used in this recipe. I recommend rice chex, but corn chex would also work well.
    • White chocolate chips - Can be substituted with white melting wafers if desired. Melting wafers melt more easily and would make a great choice for this recipe, but white chocolate chips are generally cheaper and easier to find.
    • Nonpareils - Which are tiny round sprinkles, or jimmies, both work well in this recipe. Use any colors you'd like to match the occasion.
    • Peppermint extract - Can be substituted with vanilla extract for a different flavor.
    • Confectioner's sugar - Coats your cereal, giving it a classic powdered puppy chow/muddy buddies look.

    Tips and tricks

Mixing puppy chow in a plastic bag.

Serve a crowd - As written, this recipe makes about eight half-cup servings. This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled to feed a crowd.

Mix in a bowl or bag - For easy cleanup, mix your muddy buddies in a large, gallon-sized plastic bag. It's easy to seal and shake to mix. Otherwise, a large bowl and spoon can get the job done.

Excess sugar? - Don't worry if you see excess confectioner's sugar in the bottom of the bag or bowl. Not all of the sugar is meant to stick on the cereal - this is normal.

    Frequently asked questions

Red and green sprinkles sprinkled on a bowl of Christmas muddy buddies.
What are the names for muddy buddies?

Muddy buddies is also known as puppy chow, reindeer chow, reindeer mix, or muddy munch.

Why is it called puppy chow? You shouldn't feet chocolate to dogs!

It should go without saying, but (after receiving several comments about this) muddy buddies is for humans only, not dogs. This popular American snack was nicknamed "puppy chow" due to its similar look to the dog food with the same name.

Why is my muddy buddies soggy?

Allow your muddy buddies to dry completely before storing. Otherwise, the wet chocolate can build up moisture in the container it's stored in and make the cereal soggy.

How long does muddy buddies last?

Muddy buddies will last about 1 week when stored in a tightly sealed container at room temperature, but is best within 3 to 4 days.

Do I need to refrigerate muddy buddies?

No, it can be stored safely at room temperature. I'd recommend storing in the refrigerator if your home is very warm and the chocolate begins to melt.

    Can I add candy canes?

Yes! Simply add 3 or 4 standard size candy canes to a plastic bag, seal, and lightly hammer with a rolling pin until crushed into tiny pieces. Add your crushed candy canes when you'd add the sprinkles so they adhere to the chocolate.

Can I add other mix-ins to my muddy buddies?

Yes! I'd recommend adding in about 1 cup of mix-ins for every 4 cups of chex cereal used. Here are a few ideas to get you started: mini pretzels, mini marshmallows, M&M's candies, almonds, or cashews.
