Grilled apple s'mores make the perfect grilled treat for summer and fall. Sliced cinnamon apples are grilled and sandwiched between graham crackers with a toasted, gooey marshmallow.

These grilled apple s'mores are like the perfect mix of a classic s'more and apple pie. They make the perfect fall treat. But really, who doesn't love apple pie year round?

First, we'll slice some firm apples into ½ inch slices. Then, the apple slices are slathered in melted butter and sprinkled with cinnamon. Transfer your apples to the grill - just long enough to soften them and give them a little color. Toast your marshmallows, and it's time to assemble your s'mores!

This simple grilled dessert is perfect for the whole family - kids and adults alike will love it. Plus, they're easy to customize - add melted chocolate or caramel sauce for a more indulgent treat.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients on a counter top.
  • Apples - Firm apples work best in this recipe. Granny smith apples, pink lady, honeycrisp, or gala are good choices.
  • Butter - Unsalted or salted butter works in this recipe. If using unsalted butter, you may want to add a pinch of salt with your cinnamon.
  • Cinnamon - Can be substituted with apple pie spice blend, pumpkin pie spice blend, or chai spice blend for a more complex flavor.
  • Marshmallows - Standard or jumbo marshmallows work best - whatever marshmallows you grab when toasting over a campfire or grill!
  • Graham crackers - Honey or cinnamon graham crackers are great choices for this recipe.

Best apples for grilling

The best apples for grilling are those that are firm and will hold their shape against the high heat of the grill. After that, it just depends on whether you'd like a tart or sweet apple.

Here are a few of the best apples for grilling, from most tart to most sweet:

  • Granny smith apples (most tart)
  • Pink lady apples (tart)
  • Honeycrisp apples (sweet)
  • Gala apples (sweet)
  • Fuji apples (most sweet)
Preparing apples with butter and cinnamon, then grilling.

Tips for grilling apples

  • Slice your apples into thick, ½ inch slices. Thicker slices hold up to the heat of the grill, and won't fall apart when flipping.
  • Butter your apples on all sides just after slicing. The butter seals your apples, preventing oxidation (apples turning brown).
  • Can't butter your apple slices right away? Place the apple slices in a water bath until you're ready to prepare them. This will keep them from turning brown.
  • Apples can be grilled with or without the peel (we tested it both ways) - this is a personal preference. We preferred the apples without a peel, but you're welcome to leave it on.
  • Start with clean, lightly oiled grill grates.
  • Keep a close eye on your apples, they only need about 2 minutes per side, depending on the temperature of your grill). You're only grilling long enough to soften the apples and add a little color.
  • If your apples are causing flare-ups, quickly move your apple slices to a cooler part of the grill and let the flare-ups subside.

Optional apple s'mores toppings

There are a lot of great toppings to customize s'mores or create a s'mores bar for your next backyard grilling night. Here are a few ideas to customize your apple s'mores:

  • Chocolate bars
  • Caramel ice cream topping
  • Peanut butter
  • Almond butter
  • Cinnamon graham crackers
  • White chocolate bar
  • Apple butter
  • Toasted coconut flakes

Instructions

  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat, about 375 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. If needed, clean grill grates.
  • Peel, core, and slice apples into thick, ½ inch slices (you should get about four slices per apple). Immediately brush with melted butter on all sides. Sprinkle with cinnamon (and if using unsalted butter, a pinch of salt).
  • Wipe grill grates lightly with oil, then place apple slices onto the grill grates. Watching carefully (do not walk away), cook for about 2 minutes, or until grill marks appear. Flip and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes, or until softened to your liking. Carefully remove from heat.
  • Skewer marshmallows and cook over grill grates/coals until toasted to your liking.
  • Break graham cracker rectangles in half to make 16 squares. Place apple slices onto half of your graham crackers, then top with roasted marshmallows and remaining graham crackers. Enjoy!
