Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients on a counter top.
  • Graham crackers - Use your favorite flavor of graham crackers to make s'mores. Honey, cinnamon, or chocolate are all excellent choices.
  • Marshmallows - Regular size marshmallows work great for a classic s'more. Feel free to use jumbo, square, or stuffed marshmallows to mix things up.
  • Chocolate - For a classic s'mores experience, you'll need two Hershey's milk chocolate candy bars to make eight s'mores (you may want more/less chocolate to suit your tastes). Dark chocolate, Reese's, and Ghirardelli squares are other popular options. Chocolate could also be substituted with a dollop of peanut butter or Nutella.
Making s'mores on a sheet pan in the oven.
  1. Place 16 graham cracker squares on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  2. Top half with marshmallows and the other half with chocolate.
  3. Place in the oven and turn on the broiler.
  4. Watch your s'mores until the marshmallows look toasted and golden brown on top.

Tips and tricks

Use parchment paper - For easy cleanup, line your sheet pan with parchment paper before beginning.

Don't walk away - Stand and watch your marshmallows under the broiler. The entire cooking process takes about 1 to 2 minutes and your marshmallows can burn quickly if left unattended.

Add variety - Allow family and friends to customize their oven s'mores with variations like cookies, nut butters, and sprinkles.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to bake s'mores in the oven?

S'mores take about 1 to 2 minutes to cook under the broiler in the oven.

What can you use for s'mores instead of graham crackers?

Pretzel crisps
Ritz crackers
Chocolate chip cookies
Oreo cookies
Shortbread cookies
Fudge stripes cookies

How long do prepared s'mores last?

S'mores will keep for 3-4 days in a tightly sealed container at room temperature but are best served fresh. Since they only take 1-2 minutes to make (and you don't need to preheat your oven), I highly recommend making a fresh batch each time you'd like a s'more.

Can I bake these in the oven? I don't want to/can't use my broiler.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare s'mores as directed below, then bake for up to 5 minutes, or until marshmallows are puffy and golden brown.
