Readers love making this frozen grasshopper for holidays like St. Patrick's Day, Mardi Gras, and even Christmas! This sweet dessert cocktail is easy to whip up in a blender and makes the perfect party drink for a crowd.

A classic grasshopper cocktail is made with creme de menthe, creme de cacao, and cream. This frozen version includes vanilla ice cream with an optional swirl of chocolate sauce around the glass.

A frozen grasshopper is basically like a grown up milkshake! If you like mint chocolate chip ice cream, I think you'll love this frozen cocktail. Want to make this drink non-alcoholic? I've included variations in the recipe card below.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients to make a frozen grasshopper.
  • Creme de menthe - A sweet liqueur that adds the iconic mint flavor and green color to a grasshopper cocktail.
  • Creme de cacao - A sweet liqueur that adds chocolate flavor to the cocktail.
  • Vanilla ice cream - For two drinks, pick up a pint of your favorite vanilla ice cream. Mint or chocolate ice cream would also work if you'd like to amplify those flavors.
  • Milk - If your grasshoppers look a little thick, you may need to add a splash of milk to thin them while blending.
  • Chocolate syrup - An optional garnish to add to your glasses before pouring your frozen grasshoppers.

Tips and tricks

Add milk as needed - While blending, check the consistency of your cocktail. If it looks too thick to pour, add a splash of milk and blend until smooth.

Can't find green creme de menthe? - Creme de menthe is available in clear or green variations. If you can't find green but want to make green cocktails, add a few drops of green food coloring to your blender along with the rest of the ingredients.

A frozen grasshopper tastes like a grown up mint chocolate milkshake. If you like mint chocolate chip ice cream, this frozen cocktail is right up your alley.

Why is it called a grasshopper?

The cocktail is called a grasshopper due to the green color from the creme de menthe.

Yes. Omit the creme de menthe and creme de cacao. Add ½ teaspoon of peppermint extract and a few drops of green food coloring to the blender. Add a swirl of chocolate syrup, chocolate sprinkles, a green striped straw, a mint sprig, or a thin mint cookie.
