Make a batch of fall trail mix for your hiking and afternoon snacking this fall. This simple mix is made with roasted peanuts, almonds, peanut butter candies, and roasted pepitas.

While I love my classic homemade trail mix recipe, this fall trail mix may be my new favorite! Pepitas (shelled pumpkin seeds) and cranberries add a fall touch along with peanuts, almonds, and Reese's Pieces candies.

The Reese's Pieces add some fall color and amp up that peanut flavor! This trail mix reminds me of a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Make a batch of fall trail mix for post-workout snacking, hiking fuel, or as an afternoon treat. It's shelf stable and great for taking on camping trips or long hikes.

Ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients on a counter top.
  • Craisins - Add a hint of sweetness and chewiness to the trail mix. Craisins could be substituted with regular raisins or golden raisins if desired.
  • Peanuts - The bulk of the trail mix recipe. Peanuts can be substituted with other nuts like cashews or pistachios.
  • Pepitas - Add a bit of crunch and fall flavor. A good substitute for pepitas would be sunflower seeds.
  • Reese's pieces - Add crunch, sweetness, and peanut butter flavor. Substitutes include chocolate chips and M&M's candies.
  • Almonds - Just like the peanuts, these can be substituted with your favorite nuts, like pecans, walnuts, or macadamia nuts.

Tips and tricks

Making fall trail mix.
  1. Add ingredients to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Stir to combine.
  3. Ingredients will be evenly distributed.
  4. Serve with a spoon or scoop.

Stick to the ratios - For your first trail mix, stick to the provided ratios. Your mix should be about 2-3 parts nuts to 1 part sweet ingredients (craisins and candies). If you prefer a less sweet trail mix you can add more nuts, and vice versa.

Variations - Feel free to add your own twist to this fall trail mix. Other great additions include dried apples chips, mini pretzels, peanut butter chips, cereal (like Cheerios or Chex), and rye chips.

Storage

Trail mix will last for a month or more in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. This time frame depends on how fresh your ingredients are, so use fresh roasted nuts and seeds for best results.

Keep in mind that candies and chocolate chips can melt if stored in a hot car or outdoors in the summer heat (while camping, for example).
